Microsoft “Works Suite 2004”

A Review   by   Don Brown

The Works Suite 2004 consists of several of Microsoft’s essential programs for computer users, whether they are novice or experienced.  It includes Word 2003, Money, Encarta, Streets & Trips, and last but not least, Picture It.  The packaging is colorful, attractive and explains some of the programs’ features that you will find inside.  When you open the package you will find an instruction manual and a DVD type case that contains 5 CD’s.  A brief look at the instruction manual and you’re ready to install the program.

Installation was quick and easy using 4 of the 5 CD’s.  Using approximately 1430MB of space and taking only sixteen minutes to complete, I found it effortless and errorless by following the instructions on the screen.  Two of the CD’s are needed when you use the programs: one for Encarta and the other for Streets & Trips.  I would prefer to have these CD’s labeled a different color and packaged separately for easier use, in future versions.

When you open the program,  you’re greeted with the Works Task Launcher HomePage.  This is like having a new desktop complete with a calendar, appointment book, contact phone book, radio buttons for quick projects and a QuickLaunch for all the programs in the Works Suite.  There’s even a Help Question Mark to help you in any of the programs or to view the Getting Started Manual.

Each of the programs have so many features that it would take a long time to discover what they are for and how to use them.   They’re simple enough to figure out how to get started using them and then you get the satisfaction of discovering all that can be accomplished by using these features.  There is always help, be it the Office Assistant or just the Help button.  You will be amazed what you can do or what you can learn by using any of these programs.

I’ve found that I can make a data base for my CD’s; an inventory of my home; write a personal letter; a business letter; make greeting cards; place cards; a news letter; business cards or anything you could want to publish, in any style, using Word.  I can manage my finances, use on-line banking and keep track of my taxes using Money.  I use Streets & Tips to find my way around unknown places and I like the thumb tack feature to pinpoint where I am going.  I like the features in Encarta to find interesting subjects or see panoramic views of famous places.  I wish I could have had something like that when I was in school.  Picture It gives me a chance to have fun with my family pictures: I can do anything from editing them to making a slide show for all to enjoy.

If you have a specific thing you like to do on the computer, there are many special programs you can use.  If you are just starting out, if you just want to discover what you niche is, or if you are on a budget, you can’t find an all in one package with all this has to offer.  I feel that this package has something for everyone in the family and we will get a lot of use from it.
